I think it's been proven, most of the attacks that occur close to shore are from the people hanging out in a school of fish, and the shark is just going after the food and mistakenly bites the human. I think people don't realize how many sharks are there in the water with them very close.

That's kind of like asking if grizzly bears and leopards are dangerous. Of course they are dangerous because there are reported attacks on people. If the attacks are, as often speculated, misidentification of humans as prey they are nontheless attacks and will continue to occur. Therefore, sharks are indeed dangerous.

In the scheme of things they are less dangerous than a lot of animals. Lions, crocs, and hippos are for more dangerous. (In fact hippos kill more people in Africa than crocs.) If you avoid swimming near river mouths, near seal breeding areas, during the twilight hours in the morning/evening, or spear fish you are generally safe.

Um, don't you watch the news? Many types of sharks are deadly. Humans in the water don't look any different than any other type of food splashing around.

its not that they are dangerous... its just that they don't know any better... if they see a human swimming they don't know its a human they just see a large blur and think that it may be a seal or something... I wouldn't necessarily swim with them or anything but they don't say hey you are a human I'm going to kill you....
