With Sky TV, their main strong areas are probably the sports channels as they do show a majority of Premiership games and other major sports tournaments that cannot be found anywhere else, unless you can get down to the pub to watch it there!

As for the movie channels - with the online DVD rental service being so cheap, I think all the Sky movie channels has loosed its appeal to be honest. I certainly would not want to pay a substantial amount of money to subscribe to Sky - even if they had High Definition programmes!

Free-view is catching up and cable provide a similar service where you can record live television.

There is hardly anything worth watching on Sky one either!

Its all over rated and far too expensive!!

You would have though Rupert Murdock is making enough money already with The Sun and News of the world Newspapers!

My sister & brother in law have Sky - mainly to get fuller sports coverage i.e. the football - that is not available on the BBC or other terrestrial channels.

Freeview now has lots of channels that previously would have only been available on Sky or cable.

The main additional channels on Freeview: BBC 3, BBC 4, BBC News 24, CBeebies, ITV 2, ITV 3, E4, More 4, Film4, Sky News, Sky 3, etc.

Sky has a lot more channels...too many to list - but will cost you a monthly subscription. Sky is also the only way currently to get HDTV broadcasts - if you want high definition pics.

Freeview is a lot cheaper - NO subscription & may suit you - it really depends what you want.

PS If you go for freeview (like me) - first make sure that you can get good reception in your area - you may need a new aerial.

There must be at least 100 channels and most of it is absolute trash, sky sports and discovery and national geographic are good but talk about overpriced.

How many people just keep flicking throught the channels trying to find something decent to watch but always go back to a select few channels that they often watch.

And another thing that pisses me right off is that they time all the commercials so that they are on at the same time on most of the channels.

At least the BBC are making some decent stuff at the mo.

Grrrrrr.

Its not a bad service but its over-rated and costs way too much for what you get! Many of the channels show repeats of shows from terrestrial tv or show programmes that will get shown on normal tv soon! Personally I use Freeview and its great, free and an ever increasing roster of channels (Channel 5 launches 2 new channels in a few weeks).

I dont think i could live without Sky TV....ordinary tv is just soooo boring...i dont watch all the sky channels and sometimes you think there are 800 channels and nothings on.....but it its soooo worth the money. You can even just get the basic package which i think is £16 and still have more entertainment that the ordinary channels.
Once you have sky you will never want to go back!
Also they are now doing free broadband with sky...so you get your tv and internet in one.....and it wouldnt surprise me if they put a phone package with that to in the future.

I have the basic package which is just sky one and two. I don't think its worth the money as it is very expensive when you buy sports and movies. The movies they show are good but they only show decent ones in the evening and they are frequently repeated. If you watch a lot of sports i think its more worth your while.

Rubbish, very poor value for money.
Far too many adverts, trailers etc.
Far too many repeats.
Poor quality programs, too much US and Aussie junk.

I've stopped subscribing directly.
Still get the basic paskage via cable, costs less than having it from Sky direct but I still say all coments above apply.

My wife won't hear of dropping the package because she likes Star Trek, Stargate and the sci-fi one that's under the sea.. forgotten what it's called:-)

Freeview is a much better bet, same stuff at no ongoing cost once you've bought the box.

There is a lot of varied choice. But that also leads me on to the contradiction that there are too many repeats shown.

10 movie channels, but 4 will be showing the same film, one in normal mode, one in wide screen, one in High Definition, one an hour later incase you missed the first one.

Its the same with some of the entertainment channels.

Having said that i have tried going back to the standard channels and believe me it's awful.

I only got it for the sports, but, my wife also likes the movies so we've got the whole package. The thing I hate about sky is that when something goes wrong eg. digibox goes, you can't get through to the technical support then after days of trying you get a call centre in India and when they can't help they put you back to Livingston and they tell you that it Will cost £65+ to get it fixed and you see Sky's adverts offering free box and fitting for new customers it makes my blood boil[not literally]. I just needed to get that off my chest, great question,.....
