Pubic lice are known scientifically as Phthirus pubis. They are a greyish, slate-blue or reddish-brown louse with crab-like appendages with which it clings to hairs. Lice feed on blood.

"Crabs" are actually pubic lice which are parasitic insects found in the genital area of humans. Lice are often called "crabs" because of their crab-like appearance under a microscope. They are six-legged creatures that infest the hair in the pubic area. They can also infest other body hair, but they prefer the pubic region due to warmth and darkness. Although pubic lice infestation, called pediculosis, is considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Lice causes moderate to severe itching in areas covered by pubic hair. This itch is frequently worse at night.

Because the crab louse requires human blood to survive, it buries its head inside a pubic hair follicle. It excretes a substance into the skin that causes the itching.

A female pubic louse can lay about 30 eggs (nits) - about two to three per day - over its lifespan. The eggs hatch in about 10 days. If the infestation consists of many lice, symptoms may be noticeable immediately. But if the infestation initially involves a few lice that then lay eggs, a person may not experience any symptoms for 2 to 4 weeks until the eggs hatch.

Pubic lice are spread through sexual contact. It can it be spread through contact with an infested person's bed linens, towels, or clothes provided they have been removed from the body within about 2 hours - the lifespan of a louse without a host. It CAN ONLY be spread by sitting on a toilet seat if the louse has recently fallen off the body area of the host, lice cannot live long away from a warm human body.

Animals do not get or spread pubic lice.

Lice infestation is diagnosed by looking closely through pubic hair for nits, nymphs, or adults. It may be difficult to find nymph or adult pubic lice; they move quickly away from any light source. It is usually by finding nits which confirms that a person is infested and should be treated.

A lice-killing shampoo made of at least 1% permethrin or pyrethrin is recommended to treat pubic lice. You can get these products without a prescription at your local drug store - or WalMart. The medication is very effective to kill the infestation if you apply exactly as directed on the bottle.

A prescription medication, called Lindane (1%) is available through your health care provider. Malathion lotion 0.5% (Ovide) is another prescription medication that is effective against pubic lice.

How to treat Pubic Lice:
Thoroughly wash the area; towel dry. DO NOT REUSE TOWEL UNTIL WASHED!
Saturate hair with lice medication - as directed on bottle. Thoroughly rinse off medication with water.
Dry off with a different clean towel.
Following the treatment, most nits will still be attached to hair shafts. Nits may be removed with fingernails or comb the pubic hair with a fine-tooth comb to remove nits. Applying vinegar to the pubic hair may help loosen the eggs.
Put on clean underwear and clothing after treatment.
To kill any lice or nits (attached to hairs) that may be left on clothing or bedding, machine-wash those washable items that the infested person used during the 2-3 days before treatment. Use the hot water cycle (130°F). Use the hot dryer cycle for at least 20 minutes. This will kill 'em! Or, just trash the items!
Dry-clean clothing that is not washable.

You need to inform any sexual partners that they are at risk for infestation. Do not have sex until treatment is complete. Do not have sex with infected partners until partners have been treated and infestation has been cured. Because pubic lice are considered an STD, an infestation can be avoided by not having sex or by having sex only with one uninfested partner.

Repeat treatment in 7-10 days if lice are still found.

Lice found on the head are not pubic lice; they are head lice. Lice found on the body are not pubi lice, they are body lice.
