I'm sure they're always after me. Then they suddenly drop down on me with their long detatchable legs.

IT'S TRUE IT'S TRUE. It's like they have no control over their limbs, and flutter onto you. We had one in our living room called Henry who my mum tried to kill because we are all so scared of them, and she disabeled it. It had a squashed leg. I felt sorry for it. It's proably because of global warming that they are still here.

Quite soon I think. I live in the countryside and there has been a plague of them this year. It's been commented on on the radio. The numbers are beginning to diminish now and with the cold nights coming on they will get less and less. Crane flies lay their eggs in the grass and these hatch into grubs that you can see in the winter if you look for them. Although the flies are annoying there's no need to be afraid of them as they don't bite or sting. You can catch them in your hand if you're quick when they fly near you, and the legs don't come off if you're careful. I always feel sad when they do. A good way to catch them if they settle is to cover them with a yoghurt pot and slide a bit of card underneath (a postcard sent by friends from holiday is ideal and usually around at this time of year when needed). You can then release them out of doors and feel good that you've spared a life. I find the same trick does well for removing big hairy spiders too, but make sure it's a big enough pot. I like to put these out into a hedge or woodpile and tell them that they can have a nice time in there. This amuses my family as it sounds like I'm taking them to a party, which in a way I hope I am. I don't like killing otherwise harmless creatures, if there's an alternative. After all we don't have natural predators in this country do we, and wouldn't like it if we did.

I know what you mean i have a real bad phobia of them.
When i was little a boy at school played a trick on me. He had collected loads of them in a pencil case & then emptied them above my head.
I panicked as alot of them had landed in my hair and the more I tried to brush them out the more tangled they became in my hair.
HORRIBLE!!!! I was never scared of them before that happened but now I have this fear that when I see one its will land on me & get tangled in my hair again.
I too hate this time of year and dread it each year. I have been told that each one only lives for a day. They are usually gone by middle of november so the nightmare will be over soon until next year!!!

It should be coming to an end now, as it is into October, but because of the warm humid weather I think they are lasting longer! Also as it is so hot and people have to put lights on as it gets dark out before you shut your windows, they are attracted to the light! So if you have doors and windows open do not put lights on and then they will not come into your house!

But while it is still warm they will not go away to warmer places!

Sorry but just keep the lights out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not long now, if you are in bed at night and scared then leave the hall light on and your door open...they leave to go to the light.
