It breaks up monotony. Kids have short attention spans and need the time to regroup. Haven't you ever taken a coffee break at work...its the same. Shake out the legs and get comfortable. I use to teach classes that were 90 minutes long and the kids needed breaks in order to produce more in the class.

My HS doesn't give us breaks.
