It's my understanding that you get a check to help cover the costs of taxes on food and other necessities. This will help the poor. If they are so poor, then they won't be buying things that aren't neccessary. Like Cigarrettes. Which is great that those won't be except. I hate seeing people buying food on food stamps, then buying cigs with their own money.

The fair tax is a great idea!

And, it's not just the illegals that will get busted. The drug dealers, hookers, petty thieves and others who make their living illegally will finally have to pay taxes.

In addition, there will be no more "tax shelters." There will be no buying votes by passing tax laws that help a certain group or industry. The politicians will have to do what is best for the "average Joe" instead of working on special tax breaks for those that gave him the biggest campaign contribution (a.k.a. bribe).

The average citizen will not face a bigger tax burden than they do now. Every single citizen will get the same "tax refund check" to cover the taxes that they spend on their necessities (food, clothing, etc.). The poor will end up paying no taxes except on any luxuries that they purchase. Their basic needs would be income tax-free.

I know that the fair tax isn't actually fair because it requires people who are normally exempt from income taxes due to poverty to pay a tax on stuff they buy (which would be higher than the taxes on those things today). Value-added taxes are almost never as fair to the poor as they seem at the outset. I don't even like sales taxes, to be totally honest with you.

As for making illegals pay taxes - why not just initiate a guest worker program that requires them to pay taxes? That would be much simpler, IMO. There are other ways to reform the IRS and the income tax system.
