We have a friend who is turning 40 in November and would like to give her a surprise birthday bash. Any idea's and also theme's (as in fancy dress). I am clueless but she is a special friend and I would like to do this for her.

First, make sure your friend likes surprise parties. I've had friends who were surprised and hated it. They had to spend the evening being nice and cordial because everyone had gone through so much work, but she didn't like the idea of being surprised. Someone surprised me with a stripper at my 30th birthday party, and I had never been so embarassed in my entire life.

That said, I would build a theme around something she's into; What does she collect? What does she do for fun? I threw my mom a birthday / retirement party; she's very elegant but because of conflicts with the date I had to plan a Sunday afternoon affair. Her name is "Barbara", so I threw her a "Barbie-cue." I had it catered, there were galvanized buckets on the tables with flowers and a Barbie Doll sitting on top; I used Microsoft Publisher to create the invitations. She had gone to a makeup party a few months earlier where glamor photos were taken. In one of the photos she took, she's wearing a red feather boa, looking like a vixen. I put that photo on the cover of the invite with the caption "Can you say HOT??!!!" Inside the invite was a photo of her in high school. I included a form so people could answer three questions:

1. The one word I would use to describe Barbara is __________
2. The first time I met Barbara was_________
3. The most find I ever had with Barbara was _____________

Based on the responses, I put together the "Barbie Times," a newsletter that included a word game, photos, letters from friends...I also did a poster board with pictures of my Mom from infancy to the present. They included pictures of her with friends, family and my late father. I placed the newsletter with the posterboard, so people would automatically get a copy as they stopped to look at the poster. It was a wonderful keepsake for my mom, and friends and family were able to share stories about her.

You want to do something really nice for your friend...build it around something that's important to her and that everyone associates with her. You can't go wrong. Email me if you come up with something specific, and I'll be happy to share more ideas.
