Northbridge is more important than South, it does FSB speed and memory speed, as well as PCI Express. South does less important tasks. As for brand of Northbridge, not much choice either Intel, nVidia, or ATI. Intel is the best unless you wanna run SLI in which case you need an nVidia. AMDs don't have northbridges, they use a different setup. If you are talking about brand of motherboard, I would recommend ASUS.

Ditto with Bill, Southbridge are the chips in the chipset (or just one in the set of two) controlling slow peripheral signal lines, while Northbridge controls faster core lines and/or local buses.

Slow: ISA, PCI, AGP, and ports at the back.
Core: AGP, PCI-Ex, memory, CPU.

You probably don't have a choice based on that chipset type; nor is there clear winner.

Go to www.sysopt.com. The site has great tutorials. As for what brand is best, it depends on what you do with your computer. Gamers needs are different from overclockers needs (unless, of course, you're a gamer who is overclocking).
