Marilyn, I don't understand what you would be trying to do that requires a hole in your sidewalk. Anyway, I guess the easiest way is to rent a core drilling machine and using it to cut the concrete, then you can dig your hole as deep as you want. Alternately, you can score your concrete with a concrete saw, then use a jack hammer or sledge hammer to break out the concrete where you want the hole. The edges after using this method may require repair to shape up if you want your hole to stay open.

If you don't already have one, go to the hardware store and get you a garden hose adapter from garden hose to 1/4 inch pipe thread and a length of 1/4 inch pipe as wide as the sidewalk plus maybe a foot longer, clean the grass away from where you want to start, hook up your garden hose, put your adapter on and the pipe turn the water on full force and your hole will be through befor you know it, I dident say it woulden't be messy. What size hole?
How wide is the walk?
Easiest method for small applications is to use a water jet.
