Are the scart leads connected wrongly and is it better to go back to Video recorder?

If the leads are correctly fitted, it could be that the film you are trying to record is a protected film.
The industry have worked out a few ways to stop people recording their shows (Pirate copying)

make sure that your scart connecters connect between your devices and the dvd recorder. then make sure you put the recorder onto the right av setting. ie av1 could be your ntl or av2 could be your freeview. if in doubt check at the back of the recorder to see which device goes into which input.

The tuners on dvd recorders can only record channels 2 through 125. Most movie channels on cable are a higher channel than that so you can't record it.
