I will be in San Francisco for Thanksgiving weekend. My husband and I are staying at the Francis Drake (Kimpton hotel group). Can you recommend a good place to have Thanksgiving dinner in the downtown/Union Square area or close to it? So far, I am holding at table at the Four Seasons. We are considering Cliff House, but it is a bit of a trip to get there, and it's hard to get a taxi especially during the holidays. Thanks.

The Four Seasons is nice already. We had Father's day brunch there. The top of the Mark is also nice. Around the corner from you, there is the Westin St. Francis with Mina restaurant (Michael Mina's place), but a bit overrated for my taste. Near you is also The Ritz Carlton, where they have excellent afternoon tea, and a decent restaurant. Cliff House is ok, nice view of the ocean and a decent food preparation. But, it is not the most convenient trek out to the ocean from where you are. There are a lot more decent restaurants at or near you. I also recommend the following:

Slanted Door - Asian/French Tapa's style; at the Embarcadero
Ma Tante Sumi - French/New Orleans style; at the Castro
Chapeau - French (the owner is french, the workers are french, the ambiance is very French restaurant, very close) and the food is exquisite

Have fun!

One of my favorites near Union Square is Postrio on Post Street. It is a special place. I have never had a holiday dinner there. I have found that Cliff House is overrated except for the setting and view. You might not get the best table.

The Cliff House would be spectacular given the view. Top of the Mark Hopkins would also be ideal. Food is overpriced, but again, the setting is fantastic. Given a choice between the three you've listed, I'd opt for the Cliff House, just arrange a taxi ahead of time. Given that many don't have cars in SF, you should still be able to get a taxi easily if you make reservations ahead of time.

The Carnelian Room is considered the best in SF.
They have hosted a wonderful Thanksgiving spread for many years. Service also matches the beautiful room
Good wine list too
You also get an incredible view of the City to match the food.
