Sadly, it seems like he has thrown up his hands and has no ideas on how to kick the collective butts of the team members.

Here's my question- where are the Sports Psychologists and have they had one on one sessions with each team member to find out the individuals issues of playing together towards a common goal? Do they have group "therapy" type sessions to talk about motivation and has John L. tried some group hypnosis for special teams members.

I realize he has been very concerned about his wife's health this past year. That is what he should be concerned about, because long after he's left football forever, she will be there sharing his life (hopefully)- not the members of the MSU Alumni Association.

The problem with MSU football is larger than just John L. It's an issue that permeates athletics starting at the High School level.
If every math class in elementary, middle and high school had to spend a day or two on the math problem of how many positions are acutally available on college sports teams and professional sports teams v.s the number of kids who "think" they should be either- perhaps more kids would get an education leading to a good job instead of being a punk in training with their little entourage of 15 year olds following after them.

With the exception of a few (and I do mean a "few") very intelligent young people on full ride scholarships, most of these kids are really bad students and the only reason they are even in college is because a recruiter bent the admissions rules and a team of tuotrs forces them to sit down and study so they can just squeak by with near failing grades. It's these big, dumb pieces of meat who are all too often the ones with this built in attitude of entitlement who spend their off field time partying their rear ends off, cruising Grand River in their gigantic SUV's that magically showed up on Mom's doorstep just after they were given a full ride.

These are the same kids who week after week walk onto a practice field or a game field and the only reason they are there is so they can feed their egos. They could care less about "the team" or "the school", and if any other school offered them a bigger perk, they would dump the Spartans in a hot minute and "represent" whoever paid them more. Let's face it- they're pigskin prostitutes.

All way too sad, because Drew Stanton will turn out to be one of the best quarterback in the NFL within the next ten years and the idiots who played with half effort on his team will have missed the chance at college greatness becuase they were too busy being punks.

As for John L., no, he shouldn't be fired mid season. . He SHOULD gather every psychological expert he can find and motivational coach and he should lock these boys down with them until they get their heads out of their butts. Then if the season doens;t turn around, MSU should replace him with.....
Hmmm. seems there is a certain Mr. Mariuchi available....

Yes. He has a lot of talent. Stanton could be a great QB if his team was motivated. That all falls on the coach.
The blow a huge to ND and they quit against the doormat of the big ten Ill. Last year they started out great then a blocked field against Ohio State at the half and they quit. Lost 6 of the next 7 games. They have way too much talent to play that bad. Time for a change in East Lansing.

Smith has done a good job, his team is just having some self doubt right now. If you fire anyone, it should be the assistant coaches. That is what Michigan did last year after losing to Nebraska and their team is now the 2nd best (currently ranked 6th) in the country.

Well, it's not the middle of the season yet so shouldn't you wait to ask this question after a couple of more games. Now, if they get beat at Indiana, then that will probably be just a little too embarrassing.

No, because their season might already be shot, because they already lost one in the confrence, and everybody knows Ohio State and mich. are probaly not going to loose the rest of the season. So at least let him ride out the season, and then buy out his contract.
