It depends. If you live somewhere where is little or no snow, and you aren't an off-road enthusiast, there are no benefits, in fact all you will do is have more components that need service.
On the other hand if you might have bad weather and snow, 4 wheel drive can be a definite benefit in that situation, or you think it would be fun to do some off roading then that would be a benefit.
If you decide it's for you, I'd suggest the on-demand system, or the electronic one you can switch from the comfort of the cab. Getting out and moving the hubs to the engaged position in the mud or at 20 below is no fun.

Gas consumption... 4 wheeling fun... The ability to go off into a ditch and get out easily... Four Wheel Drive... Mudding... Not scraping the ground whenever you hit a bump...

just fun mostly. Taking a Jeep into back country or just on trails that challenge your driving and vehicle is fun...of course, it's a Jeep thing :)
