There's a Youth Hostel, or I think you can also stay at the Y. In the summer you can usually find a cheap sublet near one of the universities or a room in a fraternity house or dorm.

All those are in relatively English areas. (If you pick McGill or Concordia university)

People speak English anywhere in Montreal. You should not worry about the language. If you are trying to learn French, it makes no sense that you look for areas where they mostly speak English. Have a nice day!

Try one of the internet sites like 'Hostelmania.com', they are reliable and you can also have the room to yourself if you pay for all the beds in the room.
I used to book a 2 bed room so it was private, I've used them many times.
You'll need a credit card for the online booking, but you only have to pay 10% online, the rest is due at the hostel on arrival.
