Be honest, and don't wait until the last minute to do it. As soon as you know you're not going to get it done on time, speak to your professor privately and ask for an extended deadline. Tell them you found so much information that you need a little more time to pick the best.

Truth is best, but if you just blew off your time, your best trick depends upon the professor's demeanor, and what class is being taught. There is no universal answer. Sorry.

Don't be creative, be honest. Prof's have dealt with BS for years and have heard it all. Honesty is the best policy and will get you their sympathy.
