You could decide what you want from the relationship and talk to your partner about it to see if they are thinking the same thing. If you are thinking you want to be married in 3 years, and the other person doesn't want to get married ever, you may be wasting your time.
When I felt serious about my boyfriend, I bought the book I saw on Oprah called "The Hard Questions - 100 Essential Questions to Ask Before You Say I Do". This way I was able to see if we thought about things the same way. I was so glad we discussed these things so we would know if we were wasting our time.

I suppose there's a couple different ways. One is really trying to set aside the infatuation for a moment and honestly going over how well your values (what you find most important in life) match or don't match.
Then there's the trying to picture yourself and that person in 10 years.
and then there's the famous DTR (define the relationship) talk that you have with the person where you evaluate the relationship together.
That's just a few ideas, but I think you get the gist - honest evaluation, trying to set the infatuation aside.

just start saying stuff like when we have kids, or when we get married. Talk about stuff that you want to do like 10 years from now with them. Bring it up real casual when your talking about something, if your partner isn't into it they will let you know very soon.
Example: I really like that house when we have kids we should buy one like that.
If we have kids someday we should bring them here every weekend.
