Windows Messenger comes with your operating system. If you go into Start > Programs, you should see MSN Live Messenger on your list of programs. Click on it and access it that way....it should over-ride Windows Messenger.
If that doesn't work, I've not a clue. *Shrugs*

Windows Messenger is the adaptation of MSN Messenger 5.0, in which supports some other minor protocols in which may be used by businesses for an internal instant messaging system.
It comes as part of Windows XP, and can be very annoying. The even more confusing thing is that MSN Messenger has now been renamed Windows Live Messenger.
The way I usually tackle to problem of Windows Messenger overriding my Windows Live Messenger, is using what is called the "System Configuration Utility". To open this, click on "Start" and select "Run". In the input box, type "msconfig" and hit enter.
The last tab, unless you have TweakUI installed, should be called "Startup". Click on this tab, and you will have a list of ALL the programs that are set to run at startup. It's a good idea to untick any un-neccesary applications, so that they don't run at startup, and this will make your startup times quicker.
On this screen, you will see somewhere a file called "msmsgs". I believe, but may be wrong, that it stands for Microsoft Messaging Service. This is the file name of Windows Messenger. Untick this. Be careful not to untick MsnMsgr if you wish Windows Live Messenger to run on startup.
Click "OK" and you will be prompted to reboot. Do so, and when you reboot, two different things should happen.
Firstly, you will get a prompt telling you that you have used the System Configuration Utility, do you want to use it each time you run? And tell it not to tell you again, and click "No".
The second difference, is that Windows Messenger will no longer run on startup!
Hope I helped! :)

Sorry but these people are mostly wrong,Windows messenger is NOT the same as windows live messenger.
It is safer to turn windows messenger off - it is not connected with windows live messenger and the only purpose I can see is for people to spam you on it!
I had the same problem and eventually worked out how to turn it off, here are the steps I took:-
1) Go to control panel(viewed in classic view, can select this on left hand bar) and select "Administrative Tools"
2)Select services and it will bring up a list of programs that run away in the background in windows.
3) Scroll down until you find Windows messenger, right click and then select "stop"
Should work,good luck!

OK open windows messenger go to options and uncheck the box for open at start up, this will stop it automatically signing u in when u go on line. the windows live will be in star>programmes> msn live. this will allow you to use the msn live without having to be bothered with windows messenger

Windows Messenger is listed under "Add/Remove Windows Components", not "Change or Remove Programs". Try uninstalling it from there.

Go in the Add/Remove programs thingy and click on Add/Remove Windows components on the left pane, and remove it from there.
If its not there, try this. Start>Run>"msconfig"
Go to the services/startup tab and unselect Windows Messenger, wherever you find it.
