I recently read a book that gives some interesting answers--backed by scientific research--to this age-old philosophical and psychological question: "What Happy People Know: How the New Science of Happiness Can Change Your Life for the Better," by Dan Baker and Cameron Stauth.

It's easy to read, and could be very thought-provoking for anyone who has fallen for one or more of the misconceptions about happiness that its authors describe--for example, the idea that money (beyond a certain level necessary for survival) either creates or is essential to happiness.

I definitely agree with the earlier answer that mentions service to others. Research has found an association between altruism and mental health. For example, here's a report on a 2003 study: http://www.webmd.com/content/article/75/89838.htm.

There are numerous articles on altruism at http://www.altruists.org/downloads/.

So every time you give a helpful answer to a question on Y! Answers, you're increasing not only your point count, but your overall happiness.

Every body has his own way of leading a happy life.Anyone can be happy if he gets everything he wants. But he is on the Cross road of demand and supply. There is no such tools which singly can make a man happy. Crudely the tools for happiness are:
Satisfaction of needs and wants.
Satisfaction of hunger.
Satisfaction of Sex.
Satisfaction of affilliation.
Satisfaction of ego.
Satisfaction of self-actualisation.

Being of service to others. Most depressed people would feel better about themselve if they found some way to help others. Charity is a great tool. I"m not sure if it helps the needy as much as it helps those who are trying to help. If you want to feel good, be nice to some one.
