each game is different. not just the characters, magic systems, skills, each game is different.
if i was to recomend a game, it would be final fantasy IV advance on gameboy - for both the updates, and the extra dungeon
--------
final fantasy 1 has no real storyline on the nes. the remakes for PS and gba added a little to it, so that you know where to go. basically, you are four characters that somehow are called the light warriors. you go around restoring the elemental balance of the world.
---------
final fantasy 2 i know nothing about - sorry. it's couped with FFI on both ps and gba
---------
final fantasy 3 wasn't released in the US yet. it's coming out for DS soon.
---------
final fantasy 4 starts with the inner battle of good vs evil, and then the whole world is suddenly going to be destroyed by someone, and you must save the day. it's on snes, ps, and gba
---------
final fantasy 5 introduced the job class system. you, two people, and a cross dressing female pirate must save the world. it's on ps, and soon to be released on gba
---------
final fantasy 6 is a world where magic seems to have died out so long ago that no one knows what magic really is. until terra is born. she's half esper. all of her relatives are being turned into rocks called magicite. conveniently, you can use magicite to your own advantage too! an insane jerk-off is trying to destroy the world, and you must save the day! it's on snes, and ps, and soon to be released on gba
---------
final fantasy 7 features an emo crybaby named cloud. he's got a big sword to make up for what he lacks elsewhere. this game was the first final fantasy on playstation, so the graphics looked different than the earlier sprite using games. to ride on the success of 6, they made many things the same. the magic system is based on materia, a near copy of the magicite system from 6. this game features probably the 10th person on your team to be killed off by the enemy, and many people seem to think it was the first time. you can also breed chocobos, and if you learn the secrets of incest, you'll be able to go anywhere in the world. for more FFVII info, read this question ->http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvEleo8RqpcjpAOE900nsaMjzKIX?qid=20060901124323AAJyjdj
---------
final fantasy tactics was on playstation, and moves from rpg into strategy. it's quite a fun game. until you realize the problem. the storyline battles never level, but the random battles that you will face too many of will have the enemies level with you. this will make your team capable of being twice the level of the storyline battles, and you will have access to higher level gear than the storyline dictates that you should have.
---------
final fantasy 8 also is on playstation. it features another emo crybaby, but this time, the other characters are ok. because they are certain classes. quistis is a blue mage, zell is a fighter, etc. there is also a nifty card game that is quite fun, when you learn to play. as a bonus for beating the game, you'll get to see zell choke on a hot dog. it's worth it.
----------
final fantasy 9 was the last ff on playstation, and makes an attempt to 'go back to it's roots' as people say. no, they really do. however wrong may they be. you play a jack *** with a monkey's tail that is in love with a beautiful minor named garnet. i always try to save the queen, but the game says she's too ugly. you'll also meet one of the most memorable characters in final fantasy, Vivi. who can't love him?? basically, as in every other FF, your goal is to save the world.
--------
final fantasy X and X-2 are on ps2. they took away the class of the characters... well, they still are in certain classes, but if you play long enough, each person will master each class, and each character will be a carbon copy of each of the other characters. basically, you play as the figment of everyone's imagination, but it's not your fault or theirs. you need to kill your father. well, sorta. hard to have a dad when you're not even real. this game took everything that was good about FF, and threw it out the window. X-2, i know nothing about, but it's class based, like five.
---------
final fantasy tactics advance improved where FFT messed up, and decided on a different way to learn skills. sort of. it's still the same, technically. but its' harder to abuse the system to advance yourself. the storyline is really aimed at two-to-four year olds. unfortunately, the targeted audience of the storyline don't know how to read yet.

Final Fantasy is your all time saga. It all takes place on Gaia, but the characters are never the same..though the situation their in are.. You have the hero, a rebellious fighter unwilling to trust or love because of something in his past. You have the innocent girl he falls in love with who always gets abducted and the rescue sequence takes place. You have the side characters that are the ones who follow you around ever loyal to you no matter your characters stubbornness. Then you have the Villian. Take ff7 for example. Sephiroth. this is the character that takes the cake. The villian is close to the hero no matter the relationship and has always had a bitter rivalry. If you want to see what I mean purchase the ps1 versions of FF7 and FF8 they perhaps show you perfectly what these stories can depict. As a hard core final fantasy lover, These games will have an impact on you forever.

From what I understand, its a... series of games with little to no connection between them, Each of them are in a different time setting, have different characters, so on, so forth.
I've only played a few of them and still I'm not sure what they're about. XD They're generic RPGs for the traditional saving-the-world games.
Look for reviews on the specific Final Fantasy game you're looking to buy, though.

OMG I LOVE THE FINAL FANTASY SERIES! yes it's true they all have different storylines and times, but it's basically wrapped into the same thing, you have so many characters who do different things. Like Black Magic (which is like elements) Light Magic (healing type) Summon (summon monsters to hurt your enemies) Fight, etc. And every game has unique storylines but it all comes down to saving the world from evil. MY FAVORITE games are Final Fantasy X for playstation 2 and Final Fantasy 7 for playstation. Final Fantasy is also different from other games because the storylines have so much depth and perception in them that you actually feel like you’re in the games world and you’re affected by what happens. DO yourself a favor and play one of these games, if your not hooked you must be doing something wrong. Hope it helps!
