Not strictly a "Neat" job but certainly nessesary.
Beyond keeping debris off the adjacent area floor, you can screen the opening, and monitor it on a regular basis.
Clean is relative to what natural debris exists in the area of the pump. certainly any need for a sump pump suggests that flooding occurs on some level, and water carries debris to a low point,,,IE: normal dust/dirt/sawdust from a work shop/cardboard from degrading boxes on a floor, etc. etc. etc.
Rubber gloves, a scoop or kitty litter extractor, and if the pump can be removed without disrupting the nature of it,,,some regular maintenance on IT.
