If we are talking people alive today, I'd say Aishwarya Rai. She's made quite an impact on American people recently and with the Mistress of Spices, she's getting known. Otherwise, if we are talking in generalities, It's Gandhi. He is known and respected throughout the world.

I would say Ekta Kapoor because even if people hate her they still see her serials and the way she had changed the televisions industry is great. Then there is Mr Amitabh Bachchan. I personaly dont like Mahatma Gandhi and I would love to fpllow the foot steps of Mother Teresa
