From Wikipedia: DDR SDRAM or double-data-rate synchronous dynamic random access memory is a type of memory integrated circuit used in computers. It achieves greater bandwidth than the preceding single-data-rate SDRAM by transferring data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal (double pumped). This effectively nearly doubles the transfer rate without increasing the frequency of the front side bus. Thus a 100 MHz DDR system has an effective clock rate of 200 MHz when compared to equivalent SDR SDRAM, the “SDR” being a retrospective designation.

Buying more ram presents this challenge: your mainboard is hardwired to use a ram type. Ram will have single data rate or double data rate. And it will also have a "speed."

Single data rate "speeds" are usually either pc-66 or pc-133, and they sell sticks of that as pc66/133, so that they will work in either of the two mainboard systems.

DDR comes in "speeds" also, and usually the numbers are like "DDR 2700, DDR 3200, even DDR 6400." The memory speed has to match the mainboard front side bus speed.

So you should find out what mainboard you have, exactly, and go to the site and find out what type of memory it uses before you buy anything.

Short for Double Data Rate-Synchronous DRAM, a type of SDRAM that supports data transfers on both edges of each clock cycle (the rising and falling edges), effectively doubling the memory chip's data throughput. DDR-SDRAM also consumes less power, which makes it well-suited to notebook computers. DDR-SDRAM is also called SDRAM II. and DDRAM.

DDR-SDRAM is an upgraded version of earlier type SDRAM memory modules [for Desktop PC and Notebook PC]. If you look at speed SDRAM used to work at 133MHZ and is called PC133. DDR-SDRAM inherently works at 266MHz [DDR actually mean Dual Data Rate compared to SDRAM], but best version of DDR-SDRAM modules works at 400MHz and is called DDR400. Plz note that there is a further improved version of DDR called DDR2-SDRAM which could work at 533MHz or 667MHz or 800MHz.

A very simple way of identifying SDRAM Modules have two-notches on PCB edge side with 168 pins. DDR-SDRAM of DDR400 type has 184-pins and only one notch on the PCB edge. Whereas DDR2-SDRAM type has 240-pins with again single notch.

Initially look for one or two notches and once you identified the notches, look for no of pins in DDR type to differentiate types. You may not count the pins but may judge by looking at the width of each pin since the length of each type of DDR module is same.

it is a double data dynamic ram(DDR).
it increases the data transfer rate,(it just doubles the speed of normal sdram).no need of increasing the clock to get the speed.we can use this ddr ram to get full speed.

it will tell you what type and speed to get
a cost as well if you get it from them
