Wash your hands to remove any dirt and oils from the nail. The polish will go on smoother, and stay on better.
Apply a clear base coat.
Then two coats of your color, letting the first coat dry slightly before applying the second coat.
Then apply a clear top coat. Many products are a base and top coat combo that you can use for both.
To apply the polish, dip the brush that comes in the bottle. Wipe any excess drips off on the inside lip of the bottle. Start at the base of the nail at the cuticles, and paint a strip down the middle of the nail to the tip. Then work your way out on the sides. It gives you a more even coat, and there is less chance of smear and lines.

Load the brush up with a some polish (not so much that it is dripping off). Place the brush at the cuticle of your nail and slightly move it up and down to get the bristles to fan out slightly and then in one motion, pull it all the way to the tip. Place it back at the cuticle to the side of the first stroke and pul it down again to the tip. Repeat that on the other side of the nail. When I do it this way I usually don't have to apply a second coat because it provides a good smooth coverage. Let it dry good and apply a clear top coat on to help it last longer. A little hint: If you are in a hurry you can let the polish set for a moment then lightly run cold water over your fingers. You still have to be careful not to smudge it, but it helps harden it a bit.
