There are a few reasons why we sugh.
- It is when we inhale a larger quantity of air than usual, and immediately expel it;
- Or when we make a deep single audible respiration, especially as the result or involuntary expression of fatigue, exhaustion, grief, sorrow, frustration, or the like.

I think it's actually a sort of mini deep breathing exercise to get rid of feelings which might otherwise tense us up -- exasperation, grief, frustration, etc. Nature's own home remedy before people ever came up with all these deep breathing techniques! I take in a huge gulp of breath and then expel it with my mouth half open. Literally venting one's feelings, I suppose (vent comes from the word for wind!)

Someone once told me its a nerve in the thigh / hip region. Apparently you can be taught to control this nerve and you can actually stop yourself sighing as you usually sigh when you sit or bend in this region.
