I've often wondered the same, especially since I come from Scotland. There they are simply referred to as bathrooms or Toilets. I imagine a rest room as being a place where theres a couch or two, some magazines and maybe a TV - like your local Doctor's office.
Then there are turns of phrase like "I'm going to go powder my nose" - why can't folks just say I've gotta go for a pee!?!?

They are toilets. Only Americans refer to them as rest rooms. I remember when I worked in a bank in London and we referred to the staff room as the rest room. One day, an American customer asked me where the 'rest room' was. I had never heard that term used by Americans before and told her that we didn't have one for customers, only staff. I'll never know why they use such a strange term. It's not as if the word toilet is offensive, is it?

Yes, yes! I agree. And why do they call them "driveways" when we never actually drive there? Shouldn't they be called "parkways."

No $hit! Who takes a rest in a "restroom". Maybe it refers to where you "rest" your bodily excrement.
