First one has to define democracy. There are some that do claim to be democracies and they may be in their definition but may not be in the since you think of democracy.

Islam followers can never be a free people. They are not allowed to think for themselves.

It worked, for a little while at least, here in the US, most of whose citizens are part of the very paternalistic Christian religion. Should we be spreading the word? Of course not. This is democracy, not Marxism. We should be a shining beacon of light to the world so that they want democracy. Too bad we haven't been setting a very good example of late.

Could "Democracy" ever exist in a Muslim/Paternalistic country?

If a Muslim country is defined by its constitution, the answer is no. If by Muslim country you mean a country where there are many or a majority of Muslims, the answer is yes, until they change the constitution.

Compare the constitution with the Islamic Republic of Iran

The preamble of Iran's constitution states, "The Assembly of Experts...fram[ed] the Constitution...[after input] by the government...with the hope that this century will witness the establishment of a universal holy government and the downfall of all others."

With the republic of Indonesia (1945)
THE PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION
Whereas freedom is the inalienable right of all nations, colonialism must be abolished in this world as it is not in conformity with humanity and justice;

And the moment of rejoicing has arrived in the struggle of the Indonesian freedom movement to guide the people safely and well to the threshold of the independence of the state of Indonesia which shall be free, united, sovereign, just and prosperous;

By the grace of God Almighty and impelled by the noble desire to live a free national life, the people of Indonesia hereby declare their independence.

Subsequent thereto, to form a government of the state of Indonesia which shall protect all the people of Indonesia and their entire native land, and in order to improve the public welfare, to advance the intellectual life of the people and to contribute to the establishment of a world order based on freedom, abiding peace and social justice, the national independence of Indonesia shall be formulated into a constitution of the sovereign Republic of Indonesia which is based on the belief in the One and Only God, just and humanity, the unity of Indonesia, democracy guided by the inner wisdom of deliberations amongst representatives and the realization of social justice for all of the people of Indonesia.

It could, but in many Muslim countries, all that would mean is that if the majority were Sunni muslim, the Shi'ites would get no voice in government. And that is the best case scenario.
The reality is, is that a lynch mob is a democracy and that is the last thing anyone needs.
Also, you should know that in Isalm, politics and religion are not seen as separate concepts - political leadership is religious leadership.

I agree with bearable. Democracy needs to be in full practice here before we impose it to other nations. Ours Is now pseudo democratic in that we still think we are United States when we have given up our sovereignty to the United nations. we are now like the European Union. Ours is now called something like the the North American Union no thanks to NAFTA,which is why they are now building that roadway from Mexico through U.S to Canada. King Bush now has the authority to barge into any ones home,kidnap you and either put you in a prison for the remainder of your life or execute you for saying anything about his war on terror,as you will be known as a collaborator for the terrorists, no trial,nor charges. Answering your question: Not a Slave Nation to the United Nations. My Tolerance is growing thin.

yes. it could. But it likely would not resemble the type of democratic republic that is seen in the west. Since it would be based in some type of religious law, most people in the US would not find it palatable at all.
