~First child--22 months (too late in my opinion) and we used the Playtex spillproof cups.

~Second child--12 months and we used the Playtex spillproof cups.

~Third child--never used a bottle (breast to cup) and we used the sippy cups that are made by Tupperware and First Years. They are the basic sippers that don't have the spillproof top, just a lid with a raised opening.

BTW, my son's speech therapist (his speech had nothing to do with sippy cups) advised never giving the spillproof sippy cups. She said the oversucking that is required for these cups can hinder speech and causes the teeth to shift inward (causing underbite). Go for something cheap that doesn't require too much sucking and allow your child to try cups without lids at home.

I have 4 children. They each stopped using a bottle at different ages. 2 stopped by 1 year old and 1 kept his bottle until he was 2 (only was able to have water in it after about 18 months, though). I breast fed my youngest until she was 14 months and she never used a bottle. I also am a daycare provider. I have not found a big difference in sippy cups. Both Gerber and Playtex are used interchangeably with the children. Some children prefer the small cups with the lid that has a built in straw instead of a sippy cup.

At 6 mos my youngest daughter stopped using her pascifier on her own. I took this as a hint she was doing pretty good so I started giving juice in the sippy cups... she had a hard time using the ones with the plastic spouts but Nuby has a silicone spout and you can get ones with handles on either side- she did very well with those. And now at a year old I've packed up all of the bottles and she has nothing but cups. She is learning how to use different types of cups now but she really does like the Advent ones. These are good for kids with cleft pallets as well. Gerber makes some with a kind of a rubber tip- those are nice as well. Good luck.

I only used the occasional bottle with my little girl before she was 6mths old so she wasnt attached to it like some children can be - then around 6 mths I introduced her first sippy cup. It was just a store-brand cup, but one where she could grab ahold of the handles on either side and hoist it up herself which was nice as she got older. She would have to actively suck on the top to get anything out of it, so she could flail it around without getting water/milk everywhere. She just turned 11 mths, and I guess she stopped using a bottle completely a mth or two ago... they catch on really fast to the sippy cup regardless of what kind you choose to buy. We've tried a couple different kinds and she adapts to each one.

I stopped giving my son a bottle 1 wk before his first birthday because the docotr told me as he gets more and more teeth the bottle would ruin them so they say you should have them off of the bottle between 1yr and 13 mos. but in some cases that's easier said than done. For sippy cups i would suggest one that has a soft tip like avent and do not give to the child to go to bed with that is the hardest habit to break

My son's 11 months and still on the bottle, but we're working on it. I like the Avent cups because the valve is easy to clean. But my son does the best with straws. So we ignore the recommended age and use sippies with straws. They're soft and not too long or sharp. Only problem is they're not all spill-proof. I have seen one that is, but we haven't tried that one yet. Sorry I don't know what brand it is either. My suggestion: shop around to find out what works best for you - and baby

Also, my son will not hold anything up to drink out of it. so if there's no straw I am the one to hold it for him.

In our family by the time a baby is old enough to eat smooshed table foods and sleeo through the night. Usually 12-14 months.

I like the avent sippy cups because the bottle tops fit on them in a pinch.

Mine were off their bottle between 6 and 7 months. The thing to remember is the longer you let your baby keep the bottle the more attached they will be to it & the harder it will be on you to get it away. The best sippy cup to use is one that either has little grips or handles on the sides for your baby to hold it, be sure to ALWAYS get spill proof cups as well. Don't put any carbonated beverages in them, it will spray everywhere, it happened to me, lol.

By one they were off the bottle. Give them sippy cups WITHOUT the stopper in them first. Then they'll know how it works. Then put the "spill proof stopper" in. Most babies don't have enough suction to work the sippy cups like that at first, and it gets them frustrated. Good luck.

My daughter is going on 2 in November and I stopped giving her the bottle completely at 1 yrs of age it wasn't that bad she had tantrums but hey she's not on them no longer.I got her this purple sippy cup her favorite one,it has three holes in it at the top with a good proof stopper on the inside she loves it no spills unless she puts the juice in her mouth and spits it out.Good Luck
