Here's the situation. I live in an apartment and the walls are extremely thin. Since the walls are so thin, I can hear the conversations my neighbors have even when they are speaking in a normal relatively low volume. However, there is a couple that lives above me that argue as loud as they possibly can at least once a week. They yell, and curse, and they threaten each other with violence. If that isn't bad enough, they have two young children living with them and the kids are present during these shouting matches. Many people who I've discussed this with seem to think it's none of my business. However, I grew up in a household where my parents never cursed in front of me. I have never heard the man hit the woman, but the threats and arguments are getting more and more intense. Also, they are happening more frequently and at strange times in the morning and late at night. Am I over reacting? Should I just mind my business? Or do I have a responsibility to call the police or someone?

Unless you know these peoples situation intimately and are therefor convinced the children are at risk then leave well alone, it really is not worth the bother you will suffer if you interfere without good reason. Conversations overheard are notoriously sim ple to misconstrue and the couple may just be one of those that likes to get it off their chest. The kids may not be involved at all but swearing is more and more prevelant on todays society (whether we like it or not) and not grounds for social interference by the authorities. This said if you genuinely fear for the childrens safety then of course you must act accordingly but please be sure for your and their sakes.

Noise pollution in any form is being recognised by almost all democratic countries.
If the local police or authorities are really helpful, and the law too supports the right to noise free dwelling, then there is scope.
Again, it is good to try out normal routine of trying to request them, warn them, convince them etc..
And the consequence of taking help of authorities also has to be considered. Only the situation can tell better ! Because the police cannot prevent the after effects !

You are not because it is not the lifestyle you grew up with. Try to find another place. You might not be thinking this but this is going to have a toll on you phsyically, and mentaly. If it's something bad is happening you should always try to help. To not help is to go against all that you were taught. You do have the responsibility because you can't let an injustice happen.

Complain to the landlord, especially if it's late at night and you want to sleep. You have no responsibility to help them or interfere with their lives, but they have a responsibility to not disturb their neighbors. If after a few complaints to the landlord it doesn't stop, then you can call the police.

It sure must be a pain. Move to a new location...but what if you get a similar situation there as well.
Whenever they fight...whatever the time....play some loud music....it will give them a hint that its annoying neighbors.
If you are afraid that the violence may get serious....call the cops!

call the police! the woman may get angry at you but someday she'll thank you! I was once in a similar situation and would often pray my neighbors would call the police as I was too afraid to do it myself.....

Better move out ot a better place that suits your mentality. When the structure of the building itself is not sound proof , you can not impose any restrictions on others to the extent you speak of . you have to sound- proof your apartment or move out to a calmer locality and apartment .

It depends if you feel you want to get involved or not
You could call DCF annonimously and let them handle the situation
But I would also start looking for a new place
