Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

Have you spoken to your doctor? he can prescribe you some patches or you could try nicorette chewing gum.
My mum is quitting and is using tablet's called Zyban prescribed by her doctor. You take one a day for a week then up to two a day. You carry on smoking as normal for the first week then try reducing them after 6 days, by this time the tablets are in your system doing what they should. which is to stop you wanting to smoke. She was given a 8 week's course. A friend who recomended them after succeeding with them said she quit completely after only 4 weeks and has stayed stopped for 10 month now. Apparently she did it with 4 of her friends at work and they have all succeeded with them.
good luck

I'm answering this as a non-smoker who has/had a husband that smoked. He tried several times over the past several years to quit by himself and just couldn't do it. Finally, he tried with the help of nicotine gum and it is working pretty well for him. Over the past month he has had only 3 cigarettes, much better than his 15 a day that he used to smoke. If you WANT to quit, please get help, whether it be a support group(check your yellow pages) or gum or the patch. But you have to WANT it.

that's not a very long time. you can quit fairly easy. just get the patch, and then quit. I've been smoking 30 years and , I quit all the time. My problem is I always start again.just remember to never pick one up again after you do quit. it gets harder and harder each time to stop. I know.

well start quitting stop smoking one puff of cigarette and you need 15 years to clear it up entirely, because it is heated smoke the chemicals have already entered your system since your first puff, now you just have to stop smoking, maybe take nicotine patches, and try your best to stop smoking

Just smoke a packet in one day and that will really hit you. A great way to quit smoking.
