Hi!
Depends on how long you gonna stay.
Things to do out of Bordeaux:
- visit a chateau in Medoc or in Graves area (get in touch with the Maison des Vins de Bordeaux or the tourist office, they'll help you). Maybe try to avoid to go through them, and find a chateau by yourself- speaking French would be useful then!
- spend a day on the coast. I recomend Arcachon, the Pyla sand dune (very nice! get on top!). I think it will be a bit cold if you wanna have a swim.
- visit Saint Emilion, great town, lost in an ocean of vines.
In Bordeaux:
- wonder around the "vieille ville". Saint Pierre, very nice, Saint Michel, very alive, Saint Eloi, mix between the last 2, Chartrons, nice but cold, the "Triangle", $$$ shops, the Quinconces, typical monumental French architecture.
- good shopping areas are between Rue Ste Catherine (plus perpendicular streets) and le Triangle.
- if you like museums, the "Musee d'Aquitaine" is about local history. The CAPC is a trendy bizarre Modern art museum (very nice building).
- go to nice restaurants- some local ones, plus some Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic ones- there are lots because of the immigration, great food!
- nightlife gets crazy from thursday to saturday. Have a go at the Place de la Victoire (rush hour from 11pm), lots of students (there are thousands and thousands in Bordeaux), Then on the "quais" (Quai de Paludate). For quieter/nicer atmosphere, try Saint Pierre.
- if you wanna stay in an English speaking people atmosphere, there are 10?15? Irish/Scottish/English/Oz pubs in town, generally with great fun!
I can't think about anything else right now... Hope it helps!
Do not hesitate to send me a message if you wanna know more.
;-)

This is an area where I have spent a lot of time, it's beautiful, and one day I'll have a canal barge on the Dordogne River.
Rent a car and take the road out to Libourne and then take the small road which meanders along the banks of the river. Visit St.Emilion, touristy normally, but not in October, and very beautiful. You've just missed the vendange, or grape picking, which is a fun time.
I would strongly suggest you rent a small car and take the back roads.

It's a sleepy place, with all that wine drinking you know. I found it to be beautiful but boring.
