What is the significance of the commander slashing the watermelons with his sword?

He is just practicing his swordsmanship while he is riding on a horse - I have seen to movie now over 40 times (I use it in my US History Course and having the kids compare Hollywood version of history to what actually happened).

I'm not sure there IS a "significance," but if you really want to go overboard and stretch, you could say that the black man is cutting down a typical stereotype of black people liking watermelon which, in turn, is cutting down other stereotypes - mainly that blacks are inferior and can't/won't do well in battle with/against whites. But I REALLY don't think there's any implication of that at all - just a VERY overactive imagination!

absolutely no longer. i'm a mad Disney fan, highly of Disney princesses; i'm about an same age. I watch lively Disney videos both new and previous, do Disney princess cosplay, and sing covers of Disney songs for YouTube. Disney has a particular position in my heart and in my life. you're not in any respect, EVER too previous for Disney.
