Yes. Layaway is a waste of money for a mass merchandiser. People place all sorts of items in layaway in hopes of having the money to someday pay for them. Usually they wind up collecting their funds and returning the now out of season item to the stores stock.
Lots of people will complain that this is the ONLY way they can purchase large items or do their Christmas shopping. Sorry this is just not true. I work 2 jobs and the budget is as such My wife gets 25% of the second income in monthly installments (as I am paid) for her christmas gifting. Larger items also come from this same income 25% of the check at a time. We do not use credit cards for gifts of large ticket items.
Walmart ETC are not banks and should not be used as such. If they wish to continue layaway it should be 50% down, 30 days to pay, and you lose your money if you cancel.
I worked midnights for a large retailer for a couple of years as a second job, all I ever saw in layaway was the sale/hot items that people were locking up while they made a decision, then declined and were returned to stock. These people harmed people who were in the store wanting to buy the sale/item items that were gone and lots of them sitting in layaway.
When the play station 2 came out every one of the shipment that we received was sitting in layaway. The customers that could buy them never had a chance.

I have two family members who work at Wal-mart. The really need to discontinue the layaway. They lose money on it. People put hundreds of doller worth of stuff on layaway and then come back after a few days or weeks and get their money back and the stuff has to be put back on the floor. in the mean time it didn't sell. much of the time this is seasonal stuff like swimming pools and christmas trees. They can't sell that stuff after the season is over. They have to write it off as a loss. and yes, enough people do this to make it a huge problem. Sorry, I liked layaway too and used it often. most people use it like a savings account and never pay for the stuff the put on there.

No. This is probably the dumbest decision that Wal-Mart has ever come up with. Our local K-Mart did away with layaway about five years ago (although they haven't done so, nationaly), and we stopped doing any shopping for more expensive items, there, because of it.
Most of the shopping that we do for holiday seasons is done using layaway. We also use layaway for school supplies, clothes, and other higher priced items.
This really puts lower income families in a tight spot.

NO NO NO!!!!
If it's too much a hassle to run that department, maybe they just need to modify the rules, i.e. what type of items may be placed in layaway... and that's understandable. They have their own credit card now too, don't they? They probably want to encourage people to make those purchases on the card because it will make more money for Walmart.
But they shouldn't discontinue layaway! There are people out there who don't have credit or credit cards and can only pay for large-ticket items a few dollars at a time! I used to be one of them!

I don't like it because I like to buy things for Christmas and I put it on layaway. I buy things for Christmas like around Sept. or Oct and paid on the layaway but only left is $1.00 and now i can't get anything for Christmas. I think that Walmart should not discontinue there layaway at all.

Sort of...I mean why should they use that space, extra employees, time and hassle only for those that might pay for it sooner or later. Folks see something they want then get a piggie bank put the money into until they can go and buy it.
Now during the holidays however I can see where it would benifit alot of folks that have pry eyes at home!

No - it is a nice option for people who can't afford to buy an expensive item or a lot of items at once. Especially if the item is at a sale price or is seasonal as well.

No , I don't- but I think since they have the monopoly on good prices and have put so many other business' under they now can do whatever they want. We created the monster- just wait- those prices will go way up once no one else can compete. Sucks but true.
