Both are running Windows XP. I want to transfer files from one to the other but the files are way too big to fit on a removable disk.

I think a better way is to use Ethernet.
Does your computers have a built-in Ethernet network device?
If both computers have an Ethernet network card, then you can just buy an Ethernet crossover cable (not a regular cable) and create your own peer-to-peer ad-hoc network.
If one or both of the computers don't have built-in wired Ethernet networking, then you could always buy a couple Ethernet PCI cards, or a 'USB to Ethernet' network plug. The PCI cards are cheap (as low as $7 Canadian from a computer store).
You just install the cards, install the drivers, and run the Windows Network wizard.

Yes, just set up a custom network connection to use the USB cable instead of Ethernet.

Yes, but to answer what you asked specifically, that such USB wire is in fact an integrated Ethernet wiring with USB adapters and that such wire ain't cheap. It's not just any USB wire.
