I don't think they are in a state of denial at all.
I believe they know exactly what is going on, and like everything else, they prefer to keep it quiet for fear of losing power.

I don't think Woodward's book is completely accurate if that's what you're asking. I believe Card when he says he didn't actively try to can Rumsfeld. I think he wrote office gossip. God knows that's rarely accurate.
