In the past, I have waited until the hazelnuts are brown, ripe and beginning to fall off the trees. By then the squirrels have claimed most of them. This year, I would like my fair share.

Shake the branches. Whatever falls off is ready for harvest.

You might want to look into products to deter the squirrells...not poison or anything...there is stuff that they find unpleasant that will scare them off....
