I also get a bad back during pregnancy and it is horrible. Your wife has my sympathy. With my first child, I saw a physiotherapist who helped a lot, but advised lots of pelvic floor exercises to strengthen all the muscles in that general area. I think it helped a bit. I found that having lots of pillows around me in bed helped - although towards to end of my pregnancy there wasn't room for my pillows and my husband so he got the spare room for a few weeks!! I also did yoga - lucky to have a class near us that is only for pregnant women and got some good advice on positions to try from the teacher, who happens to also be a midwife.
Also tried warm baths and heat pads (you can get them in chemists) to keep the area where the pain is warm. I found that really helped too.
If it is really bad, she should tell her midwife/ Doctor and see if she can get some physio and/ or a support belt.
Not too long to go now - I hope you both get through the last 7 weeks or so as pain free as possible and enjoy the rest of the pregnancy.

My suggestion would be that come evening time you run your wife a nice hot bath with some relaxing candles and nice music and when she is out be ready to give her a back rub and a hot water bottle, this could be because the baby is gettin quite big now and either resting on a nerve and putting alot of pressure on her,
I'm not sure about how safe deep heat is to use during pregnancy but she could always speak to her midwife or GP and check as i know that this can be a good help
Good luck for the birth of your baby x

I had bad back pain also, and one of the most soothing positions was the following.
Take a body pillow and fold it into a U shape on a bed, couch, floor, whatever. get a few more pillows, place your belly in the opening of the U and pull the ends of the pillow under to support hips(you can use a few other pillows under hips as well) Place a few pillows around the shoulder and chest area, and just lay down, being in the stomach lying position took alot of pressure of of the back, even if just for a ehile, and was really comfy. Also, go to a indoor pool, being in the water feels great as all teh weight of the baby is taken away from the water, and off the hips, also feels great. But is weird getting out cause you can feel it all settle back down again! lol

I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant, from about 32 week I had terrible back pain. Like your wife I also had to take time off work as I sometime struggled to get out of bed. I asked my midwife to refer me to a physiotherapist, whch was the best thing i've ever done. She gave me a serious of very easy exercises to do and a support to wear (the most unattractive thing I've ever seen) and it all helped so much. There should be a physio at your hospital who is qualified to help pregnant women. She should not continue to suffer, speak to the midwife asap and get the ball rolling.
Hope she feels better soon.

massage is the best - get her midwife to give you some tips on how best to do it or research on the web. paracetomol is safe to take in pregnancy but be careful about the dosage. a hot/warm bath or even a towel heated on a radiator and pressed on the area can work wonders for a while.

It could just be the regular misery of pregnancy, or it could be a urinary tract infection. If her doc hasn't checked her urine lately, she might suggest that.
She can also ask if there's anything she can take to help her sleep at night, and if there's anything she can take for the pain. If she's that miserable, and it's increasing, she should see the doctor.

Her midwife should be able to give her a big elastic belt which will support her back and take some of the weight of her bump.

i agree, i think that she should be at home now, also the doctor can move the baby if needed, ive had it done myself, or have her go and see a chiroprctor, they can help also, one thing that i recommend, from the sounds of it she might have really bad back labor, when she does go into labor, hope she wants meds. because it gets way worse then.
