My PC currently has 512mb (2x256mb) of RAM. I'm buying 2gb (2x1gb) to install. I had someone tell me that I should remove my 512mb and just run the 2gb because the 512mb won't help my performance and may even hinder it. Is this true?

2.5GB of memory is definitely better than 2.0GB memory. I suppose that you hv 4-slot with first two slots occupied with two unist of 256MB modules. You may install a pair of 1GB modules in the next two slots. But you hv to remember one point. I assume that your existing modules are of DDR400 rating. If so, plz buy the additional modules also of DDR400 rating. If one of the pair is of slower type, say DDR333 or DDR266, then the whole combination would only work at lower-speed. So, the hinder part of question is only valid if both the pairs are not of same speed [preferably of same make].

Well the performance increase from 128mb to 512mb is a lot higher as when going from 1gb to 2 gb.
The difference between 2gb and 2.5 gb is hardly noticeable.
in fact its a lot.

make sure you put the 2 1gb sticks in the first 2 slots then 128mb in the 3/4 slot
the differance will be slight but might help your graphic card run smoother as it shares some system memory

It depends on what motherboard you have. Some are made so that you should use 2 identical sticks for the best performance. Also, make sure the RAM is the same speed, latency, etc. as your 512 stick.

that does'nt make sense. 2.5gigs is better than 2.0gigs. unless you do alot of intense proccessing, that extra 512mb wont even matter. 2gigs is way more than enough
