1) choose a screen size of 14" Notebook-PC [laptops are now called notebook PCs] as it is the most sold and so manufactured in high volumes. this would give you best price
2) if you are beginner, choose a entry-level notebook PC with Intel Celeron CPU. If you are a power user, look for Intel Centrino.
3) again as beginner it is okay with 512MB RAM and for power user, you may need at least 1GB
4) Hard disk space could be 40GB to 80 GB depending on the model. Since any amount of HDD space is not sufficient, you may at a later stage opt for a external USB Hard Disk Drive to over come shortage of storage space
5) rest of the features like USB ports, LAN port, Modem Port etc are standards features for any model
6) you may get worried about battery-duration, but any 4-cell version should give you about 1-hour operation even if you hv charged fully and even if the mfr says 4 hours. if you go for higher battery-duration, it could be very expensive. this is the reason most people take the charger along
above should be sufficient to decide on choosing a notebook-PC

Sience You are student.I don't suggest you to buy a expensive laptop.
Being A Engg. You must know the Return On Investment (ROI)
In Jodhpur Compaq is costing 28K Go ahead and choose it.
Some days ago My Brother living in Delhi purchase Apple.
I checked it today and Does not find any thing that gives output of invested 70K.
Best Suggested Laptop is Compaq/Hp
In delhi there is a laptop available in Nehru Bazar costing 20K.Don't Buy it.Totaly unrealiable.

The best laptop out of my experience is IBM thinkPAD series. Out of 7 laptops I have owned, 5 of them have been thinkPADs. They're the workhorse of laptops. Built reliablly, and tough if they're dropped. No Celeron here buddy. Straight up PENTIUM M technology. It's well worth it. TRUST ME.
