Every generation coming up thinks that things are on the precipice of disintegration. In my misspent youth, my friends were fond of saying that they could sense the downfall of western society and it would collapse into anarchy within 10 years. If it did, I missed it.
There are many problems in today's society and some (like homelessness, domestic violence and child abuse) are intractable. They will happen as long as there are people. But other problems come and go, and many of the worst problems of my youth seem quaint today.
All you can do is to do your best. Don't worry... things will be in pretty good shape when your kids start telling you that everything looks like it's going to fall apart in a few years.

welll, pvreidtor has a point, there were many problems that seemed like they could be THE END, and the opposite is true too though, things seemed better and safer and the schools were better and etc when we were kids, now they DO seem to be going downhill. I have to say that the way our society seems to be going, it wouldnt take as much to end it as we know it, there is less of a safety net, we are more dependent on our toys and power system to feed us and support us.

Well, going downhill may take us to the valley green !
Jokes apart, yes indeed the erosion of values in society is the single largest threat to our survival - these values were in the first place nurtured to get us into a social framework so as to ensure overall security and survival.
The biggest threat is not the nukes nor the wmd's - these by themselves can do no harm - I mean man has to use them if at all. And it is erosion of our human values which would make that happen.
Scientific progress without social stability is a decisive prescription for disaster. In the name of freedom, we can not allow moral and social values to be eroded.

Societies have cracked down before. It is just that we don't want to believe it, specially not the politicians. They are making fortunes of our hopes and feares, without any other responsebility than resigning.
The youth of today have certainly more difficulties than for 50 years ago. The pensioners of today are the lucky people.

Christians will tell you that it will only end with the 2nd comming of christ. To be frank, that is our only hope. Otherwise mankind will cease to exist! There is no end in sight
