I visted one and I don't see what the hype is. Is it being around people like yourself with $$ ? The Activities ? Or is it an ego booster, seriously I need to know. I can not afford to belong to anything like this, just curious to hear what people who can and do get out of it.

I CAN afford it but would NEVER join a private club !

One one hand...The people I have spent time with at such places are soooooooo shallow and in need of ego trips. They love to throw the fact that they "belong" to a club in the face of others. (or those who don't belong I mean) I couldn't care less if a person "belongs" anywhere so I limit my time with those people who act like that.

2) Yes activities within these clubs are often different from anywhere else.... especially high stakes gambling/betting & some rather unique sporting events. Some do it all in good fun some are hgihly competative with it. The treatment is spectacular. Wait staff is trained to treat YOU RIGHT for YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT !!

3) There is a certain amount of safety within clubs like this. NO riffraff due to the high price, certainly excludes people who would tend to be an idiot or trouble causing chap. ((though I must admit I know a few RICH idiots, but no trouble makers))

All in all it is a place where wealthy people and people who pretend to be wealthy go to get away from what they call "lower class people than they are". Being within the environment occasionally, I have experienced the treatment of wealth. I was treated differently in those places. I do not dress fancy in public nor do I flaunt money so almost no one knows I even have money, I am treated like a regular joe which is what I want... But go in the club and WOW you are treated sooooooooo much better. I prefer the reg. joe treatment though... nothing to hide, can be yourself and fart like the best of them...ha ha !

I reckon it is an ego booster, even those people who have come from poor backgrounds and end up rich alot of the time feel as though they are somewhat better than others, once they have alot of money and by joining exclusive clubs, they are making a statement about just how much better they are, so they can tell their friends and so people will talk about them. I think the idea "the only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about" still applies to the well off these days...

I think for those with a lot of money like to be singled out from those who do not. Yes I truly believe it is an ego booster. They feel they are a part of something that not all people can be a part of. This makes them feel superior and above others. Some with money also like to mingle with others. More than likely the like to spend their money the same way or invest in some of the same things. This gives them conversation.

Not all are like that though.. There are some out there who dont flaunt it like others.

Because by joining a club for folks with money it's a status symbol. Also, in my opinion, though it's not always the case, people think that by joing these kinds of clubs it's like announcing to the world "Hey look at me, I have lot's of money, so much money in fact that I belong to this special club where only people EXACTLY like me can join."

I think it's lame cause not for nothing, if I had lots of money the last thing I would do it hand it over to some bone head just for the privilage of hangin out somewhere.

Just my opinion :)

Snobbery, vanity, ego, exclusivity, status, all apply, but the reason is about a simple as; because they can. I worked for a family owned business for years. The people who owned it were some of the nicest, most down to earth folks you'd ever want to meet despite the fact that they had more money than Croesus. The father and son were both members of the snootiest country club in the city, and seldom set foot in the place. The didn't like it nor most of their fellow members, but belonged because it was expected of them by the rest of the tycoons in town, many of whom we depended upon for business. For them it was just a necessary status symbol.
