That's the ABSOLUTE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rich people are "just too precious" to go fight in Bush's illegal war in Iraq! Poor people are just the guinea pigs trapped in this mess he made! And they're being killed off by the ruthless al-Qaeda-affiliated insurgency with explosions on a daily basis!! Over 2,700 of them, and counting!!!

Partly false.

Most people, anywhere in the world, at any time in history, in any economic demographic, will never go to war.

Historically, most people who die during war are not fighting in the war. Therefore, it is reasonable (although maybe not true) to assume that the people who cannot get out of the way of a war are poor and more likely to die.

Rich people don't fight wars - sometimes. The USA military is populated with mostly middle class people (not poor as is the common misconception). Over the last five years, 14.6 percent of military recruits have come from the poorest quintile, while the wealthiest quintile have provided 22.0 percent. In most European countries, everyone has to serve regardless of wealth. In most developing countries the military is populated with the wealthy or politically powerful (who may not be wealthy) of that particular country.

Therefore, it is safe to hypothesize that most armies are populated largely with middle-class citizens, where a middle class exists. Further, the wealthy probably outnumber the poor as a percentage of the demographic.

All that said, I wonder how many of the wealthy military personnel are infantry grunts?

First it depends on your definition of "poor." Where do the moderate income people fit into the equation? What is your definition of "rich?" What's the cut-off. It's not unusual for a field-grade officer to be pulling in close to six figures, when you include housing allowances, allowances for being in a war zone, etc. Even senior ranking NCOs do pretty well for the same reasons.

But of course you knew your premise was pretty lame anyway, didn't you.

This can be true in a lot of cases. In many countries people who join the military do so as a way out of poverty. The army can provide education and training for them that they cannot afford normally.

Unless you really have a thing for being in the military, if you could find another way to make money that was less of a threat to your life you wouldn't choose the army.
