I always sing the praises of the east - Leytonstone is great. 25 minutes on the central line to Oxford Circus; easy access to M11 to get out of town and Dover to get out of the country; a quick trip to the seaside e.g. Southend, Whitstable, Herne Bay; City Airport a 10 minute drive away. Massive 24 hour tesco, plenty of pubs and bars, award winning restaurants. Rents are cheaper than north, south or west and property prices are still within reach for most people with a decent job. Watch out for the Olympic games development (5 mins away!) forcing prices up soon though!
Easy access to epping forest with its miles of walks, lakes, horse riding etc etc; It's in zone 3, so travel costs are relatively low compared to locations further out.

A lot of people don't even look east. Most new arrivals in London take the blinkered view that only the west or zone 1 will do. Total crap. You'd be mad to live in the rip-off clone areas like Fulham, Balham, Clapham, Chelsea etc.

I live in Enfield, takes me 40minutes to get into central london. Enfield is nice, the green belt is just 5 minutes away, its all fields there. As for Enfield, I rarely go out but as far as shopping goes its got everything you need.

anywhere that's truly affordable probably isn't close enough to the centre to really be called "london".
