Depends whats causng it and if its a productive cough or not. Sometimes honey and lemon will soothe the throat and hence ease the cough. For others its a runny nose, whereby sniffing even a little can cause the cough - in which case a nasal spray can help. If you have any mucus that you cogh up it may take a visit to the doctors before you can cure it. Maybe try an off the shelf linctus for a couple of days in the first instance.

I would like to help you, but you must understand that I am not a licensed doctor.

First I recommend that you go to the drug store and purchase three things over the counter...

Get a large bottle of Vitamin C tablets of the Time Release kind. The amount of Vitamin C in tablets varies from brand to brand so pick a brand that gives you a good supply per pill. This vitamin is the key ingredient in fruit. So if you take a good supply per day (say 2 pills in AM, 2 pills at Noon, and 2 pills at Bedtime) the first three days, your body will think you have gone on a fruit diet. Ha. The effect of taking a lot of Vitamin C is that you will fill your body with the things it needs to fight off the cold/cough.

You may not realize it, but I suspect that you have a bad cold that has settled into your chest - therefore the bad cough. So the second thing you need to purchase is an Inhaler Bottle of Cold Medicine. I am not sure of the brands that you have in the UK, so I will leave that choice up to you. Use this inhaler to squirt cold medicine up your nose and into your lungs each evening for several days. When I did that relief came for me fairly rapidly.

The last item you need to purchase is a fairly big jar of Vicks Salve which is a mentholated clear jel kind of cream that penetrates the skin and opens nasal passages pretty well. It is not very expensive here in the USA. At night, smear a good dob of that Vicks onto your upper chest and slip some into each nostril. What you want to do here is to loosen up all that flem in your chest and get it out of your body. Plan to use a fair amount of tissues as your nasal passages begin to drip and run. Get rid of all used tissues.

If the cough continues with no relief, I suggest you see a doctor immediately. The doctor can check you over and make sure that there is nothing serious wrong with you, and possibly give you a shot of antibiotics, and even a bottle of pills (antibiotics) to get you through the worst of that chest cold problem.

Oh yes, i almost forgot... If there is any way you can use steam to moisturize your lungs internally, do it. One way is to stand in a very hot shower and breath the steam vapors for a long time. Another way is to check around and see if you have or can borrow a Vaporizer from a neighbor. This is an electric gizmo that boils water to make steam and increase the humidity of your sleeping area. Do that. Any method you can use to produce steam and breathe it into your lungs will help to break up the congestion you deal with when you have a bad cough. Try putting some blobs of Vicks into the boiling water in that Vaporizer. That works well also.

Good Luck,
Zah

Whenever I was kept up at night coughing (as a kid) my mother would melt a teaspoon each of butter and sugar on a spoon over the stove and then give it to me.

No kidding. Just that little bit REALLY works. It's the SUGAR in the cough medicine you buy at the store that sooths the cough. The butter coats the back of you irritated throat so you don't get that tickle back there and cough your head off.

The most effective 'over the counter' cough medicine that I've tried is called Benylin. They produce a range, each of which is used for the particular type of cough you have, ie., chesty of tickly. If the cough is really bad, however, a visit to a doctor is advisable as it may need investigating.

Well Pat! the first thing you need is plenty of rest. Then drink Green Tea, you can add honey and lemon to ease coughs and encourage healing. You can also drink warm onion broth to cleanse and reduce congestion. You can Inhale (do not drink) Inhale essential oil of eucalyptus, which will help expectorant and decongestant. You can buy that at any supermarket and the eucalyptus oil at any heath food store. GET WELL.

A 1994 study using AIDES patients showed C1 adjustments given by chiropractors raised CD4 levels (immune T-cell function) 48%. Along with that I would give 800mg freeze dried bovine Thymus gland, 5000mg estereified Vit. C, and ask you to drink a slug made of a combination or immune boosters. You are welcome to call me at no charge but I think it better that you go to my web site fro free information and to e-mail me. Dr. Bartels losgatoschiropractic.com
