Because they don't have a job, they don't go to school, don't have to cook or clean or take care of the kids. They just have too much time on their hands! lol

They aren't really sleeping. Their eyes may be closed but they are totally aware of their surroundings. They just simply do this because their is nothing else to do. After all, they aren't able to watch tv and enjoy it like we do for entertainment. Cats do spend a lot of time really sleeping though during the day because by nature they are nocturnal.

I was reading an article the other day about dogs and it said that dogs spend about 80% of their day sleeping. I have a toy poodle and I can believe that, because she sleeps a lot.

They produce a chemical called Seratonin at a far greater rate then most mammals, which aids in their sleepiness.
Not too mention they are also nocturnal in nature meaning when you are sleeping they are ready to go.

I tried to ask my little dog (Shih-tzu) just now but she is still sleeping! She has a long morning nap, pre lunch nap, after lunch nap, later in the afternoon nap, pre dinner nap, after dinner nap and then, after a grueling day, she goes to bed for a nice relaxing snooze all night!

It's part of their instinct. In the wild they haven't got a clue when they're going to get their next meal, so when they're not hunting they merely rest or stay inactive to conserve energy.
