the history of the house of orange starts in 800 after AD when Guilhem ( a vassal of Karel the Great ) become in the possession of Orange a little town in France. From the on he and his descendants will carry the title " of orange " ( van oranje ) . The house of Nassau will come in the title by marriage and heritage in 1538.
The rest is history but this is the explication for the orange that is in fact the name of a town that once belonged to the family but now is part of France

The popularity of the colour Orange is due to the Royal family's name which is Oranje (Orange). The family of Orange has roots in what is now Germany, and the colour Orange became very popular because of William of Orange, seen by many of us as the main cause of Dutch independence, because he led a successful resistance against the Spanish occupier.

It was also due to the fact hat the Dutch royal family had recently taken possession of the Principality of Orange, in France, hence the name Prince of Orange. Originally, there WAS Orange in the Dutch flag, but it was a very reddish-Orange colour and so there is Orange in the flag.

Does this help?

The royal family's name is spelled the same as the color orange (in Dutch, anyway) so orange kind of became the national color. Not for the Dutch flag (which is red, white and blue), but for a lot of other stuff - like the jerseys of the national soccer team, etc.
The Dutch love their royal family.
Simple as that.

That is a hasty and uneducated generalization of the Dutch people.

You can't seriously believe that every citizen of the Netherlands loves the color orange, do you?

I don't mean to be cheap or anything but all Dutch don't love orange... I mean, I'm Dutch and I don't.

Though it is not in the flag, it is the official color of the Dynasty. And yes, you shouldn't generalize.
