Could be a normal color change as they mature, or could be ammonia burn. Take a sample of your water to the pet store to find out. The excess ammonia will kill your fish so do so quickly.

Ich is not black, ich is small and white like grains of salt all over the fish's body. Fungus is also extremely unlikely.

When goldfish skin is irritated, after the irritant is removed the immune system starts to heal it. During this process chemicals called cytokines are released that tell the immune cells where they need to go. The cells that cause black pigmentation, melanophores, are attracted by this chemical, and thus end up where the immune cells are going. Therefor, black is a sign of healing. This is often seen in fish recovering from parasitic infections or ammonia burn. Review your husbandry practices and insure the water quality is perfect to prevent future issues. If it is melanophore migration, it should go away again in 3 to 6 weeks.

Good job inghit-someone who finally has a clue!!!!!

Don't treat for ich/ick or fungus, that doesn't sound like what your problem is.
Stick with the water changes, do them once a week, I know some lady here says monthly, which is poor advice. Do it weekly to avoid problems, at least 20-30%.

If your dealing with ammonia still, do it daily until your tank finishes cycling-at least 20-30%. Don't bother with the ammo-lock that stuff is junk. Be sure you use a dechlorinator for your water/assuming it's tap water. Be sure you don't overfeed. Read through these forums on how to cycle your tank and care for it.

It could be a fungus. Ask someone at the fish store about putting something in the water, or cleaning the tank or bowl with something to rid the water or things in the tank, such as rocks or plants, of a possible cause of the black on your fish. That is what I would do if I had fish. Hope this helps.
