Front wheel drive outside CV "Constant Velocity Joint" Like a better version of the old U joint. Is encased with a rubber boot that splits open at 60 to 100 thousand miles and all the grease slings out and dirt gets on the finely machined surfaces of the joint wearing them down. Next think the car is clicking when turning and acceleration. Axle rebuilders sometime replace the cage weld repair the race(s) put new ball bearings in and new boots clamps for around $100 an axle. Installing the axle is the most nasty job you will do on the car old grease and dirt messy. Only three fasteners on most Strut type cars steering knuckle to strut bolts (2) and large axle nut. Do not attempt this job on a Mazda 323 or 626. 323 you will damage the wheel bearing getting the axle out. 626 & Ford Probe the axle will be rusted in place.

not enough info but one basic rule in today's vehicle to lessen the possibility of axle damage is to put in adequate maintenance on the rubber boots. A regular checkup will mean a lot. I have mine twice a year -- making sure that the rubber boot is not damaged and putting in new grease.

Not enough information, there are short shafts on front wheel drive cars and rear end differentials on rear wheel drive and 4 X 4 models. Email me with what you have, I have a lot of manuals.
