There cannot be a unique event that triggered the big bang because for an event to take place time must exist and time did not exist before the big bang. So, there is no unique event. It just started off like that. This is still under reaserch.

The easy questions first eh? In the Hindu region it was caused by the music of Ghandarva, the celestial musician, his music and dance created everything in the sheer joyful volition of creation.
The scentific answer is that there were 2 stable states, positive and negative and somehow, nobody knows why, gravity came along and exploded it all. The only reason we are here is because the positive state is a little bit stronger that the negative state, once again nobody knows why. This is what education is all about, creating a state of complete ignorance, only one knows just why one is ignorant.

Personaly i do not belief in the theory of the big bang. If once there was NOTHING then it is not possible to make something out of it.
