Maybe yu don't know, but the USA senators have apppoved a law for turturing strangers in the USA land. I suppose that G.W.B. will sign it up (approve, I mean).
Aren't you guys, in certain sense, returning to medieval ages? Turture in 2006? That's crazy! And more: in a civilized country. First, how many of you knew this I'm talking about? I think you do bc you here are well informed. But the majority of US people don't, I guess.
Torture is against Christian ethics. For sure.

They never were a civilized country.
Any country where citizens are free to arm themselves to the teeth, where capital punishment is lawful, where the poor are left to fend for themselves or starve, where proper health care is a privilege of the rich is NOT in my view a civilized country to start with.
Allowing torture is only one more thing to add to the list, and not surprising at all.

But why should average Joe american care that foreigners are getting tortured? So long as he can drink a cold one on his porch with his shotgun and live tomorrow pretty much like today then what difference does it make? The people who benefit are the rich who are in power, cause they can brainwash those who don't agree with their unethical practices - viz the intelligent with a social conscience, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the normal voter, so as long as those in power can scare the voters that this draconian legislation is necesary it will continue to be enacted, giving the government the power of God - all powerful uber spies.

Honestly it's pretty sick.
We label our enemies or simply people we don't like terrorists, and then ignore international law and ethics and torture them. There was a report released recently that stated that Americans are now committing more acts of torture in Iraq than Saddam was.
All we are doing is creating a new generation of people who hate us and wish to do us harm. Bush may pretend to be tough on terror, but by killing and torturing as many civilians as he has there will be plenty of terrorists for many years to come.
America will sadly pay the price for electing this idiot in to office.

First, this has nothing to do with torture, simply interrogation techniques. Second, Brazil is in no position to preach to the US. From the 2004 Human Rights Report: "State police forces (both civil and military) committed many unlawful killings and killings due to excessive force. Police also were implicated in killings for hire and death squad executions of suspected criminals, persons considered undesirable, indigenous people, and labor activists. Police tortured and beat suspects and arbitrarily arrested and detained persons. Despite its powers to do so, the federal police failed to act in the numerous human rights violations by state authorities, and failure to punish perpetrators perpetuated a climate of impunity."

There is no law in the U.S. for pointless torture. We are about to set for the guidelines for interrogation methods. The "torture" being approved a) isn't really "torture" because it isn't going to result in any long-term damage b) will only be performed on high-priority targets (the people who have pertinent information), and most importantly c) tactics like this are PROVEN to get information and save lives.
And I disagree that torture is against Christian ethics. The Christian scriptures extoll wisdom, and wisdom is by nature practical and pragmatic. The Bible also contains several commands for the killing of people, when necessary, including women, children, and animals.
I'm not particularly religious, but the God of the Bible is hardly a tofu-dining pacifist.
Responding to some of the Answers: You American bashers are such ignorant morons. Islamic facism is taking over Europe with its sites set on the world, and Bush and America are the only chance you have of maintaining your life. Idiots.

That "torture" is supposed to refer to terrorists only, who should not be protected by habeas corpus OR the Geneva Convention.
I agree with that completely.
