in my area they dont ask for 'loose change' they ask for 'spare notes'.

Depending on their attitude and/or apparent needs (I tend to ignore agressive panhandlers), they can get change or a note when asked, for example, about the location of a street about which I usually already know the location.
The way they react when they absolutely don't expect the tip (even though it is clear they need it) is often heartwarming.

True story(Not a joke)-My friend took in this retard homeless kid to do house work in exchange for food & shelter & one day my friend asked the kid to wash my car. The kid did & I gave him some money. The next day I went over to my friends house again & after coming back to my car, found big scratches made by a cutter. We found out that the kid did it, he said, 'I did it coz I wanted to wash it off & get some money.'My friend then kicked the sh!t out of him & threw him back in the streets.
A pricey lesson
